Winkworth has flourished since its founding in the early 19th century and is now the single largest estate agency in Greater London with sixty one offices in the capital as well as a hundred offices UK wide. Winkworth is also a global brand with a dedicated China Desk and new offices in India dedicated to developing international working relationships within the property sector.

At the Wimbledon branch of Winkworth, we focus on mid to upper range properties to let and to buy, not forgetting the work we do on the property management side for clients, some of whom we have worked with for over a decade. We let and sell the whole spectrum of properties from modern studio apartments to large family houses.

WHERE DID IT ALL START

Winkworth was founded in 1835 by Henry Winkworth. The original Head Office was located in Curzon Street, Mayfair and there was a country office in Brighton. Originally, the main business involved selling residential property to an exclusive client list and letting houses in Mayfair to the landed gentry for ‘the season’.

In 1981 Winkworth became a franchise estate agency—the first in the UK. Winkworth were also the first estate agents to have multiple London offices. The company celebrated its 175th Anniversary in 2010.

WHAT DO YOU PUT YOUR SUCCESS DOWN TO?

Our staff are all local people who have lived in the area for many years and know the Wimbledon way of life. This allows us to really put ourselves in our potential buyer’s and applicant’s shoes. Also, having a young family who are at school locally means I can appreciate the needs of those with children. This kind of first-hand experience of the area combined with a good reputation and expert training at the Winkworth Academy creates a winning formula. We also benefit from a shared database that pools the resources of our one hundred UK offices making up the Winkworth franchise. One other factor that has become increasingly influential in recent times is the power of social networking as a sales tool. Being within the top five of the ‘Zoopla100’ most influential estate agents in social media, is the direct result of using Facebook and Twitter in the most effective way possible, generating several lets and sales using these tools as our first port of call.



YOUR MOST INTERESTING PROPERTY SOLD?

An unusual event took place when we rented two semi-detached houses in the grounds of a vicarage in Wimbledon town centre for two or three years before the diocese instructed us to sell them. Not long after the tenants left, a neighbour informed us that smoke seemed to be coming out of one of the houses. We dashed down there to find several young pyromaniacs busily trying to set the kitchen on fire after having had a few pizzas beforehand. As we entered, they tried to escape via the garden but could not get over the wall so we quickly put the fire out ourselves and then called the police who apprehended them. The houses were sold and subsequently demolished to build a block of flats.

FAVOURITE PLACE IN YOUR OFFICE AREA?

Wimbledon has so much to offer and I really consider myself to be spoilt for choice. I often bring Truffle, my Black Labrador to the office as she loves going for a walk on Wimbledon Common and also where I live in Merton Park. You can relax in the many leafy green spaces within the John Innes Conservation Area. In fact, we have just put on the market a four bedroom, semi-detached Victorian house with tons of character in this exact area and our applicants so far have been incredibly impressed by how much open space there is to explore, especially when they have had one of our bespoke guided tours.
